Renovation and restoration of a ’19-century national monumental mansion in The Hague

In one of the most beautiful streets of Scheveningen, at the edge of the van Stolkpark, you will find this stately 19th century mansion. It is part of a mirrored block by the same architect, and because of its rich detailing has the status of a national monument.

However, the mansion has hardly had proper renovation since its construction and is in need of a thorough renovation, restoration of details and improvement of living comfort. To that end, the design made involves moving the kitchen from basement to first floor, modifying several fireplaces and restoring some of the house’s original features. Thus, the porch once associated with the house will be brought back, several windows added at a later stage will be removed again, and reinstalled in their original locations. All this without losing sight of the fact that the house is allowed to be back in the “now. For example, the old back room now provides space for a modern kitchen with an island, a breakthrough is being made from living room to dining room, and all installations are being renewed. New vistas are also created on the floors between the various beautiful rooms; while retaining original ceilings, radiators, etc.

The attic consists of an intricate set of trusses and joists. Special because of its method of construction, but not of monumental value. So on this floor, it is possible to start with a blank sheet and design a beautiful open space, giving access to additional bedrooms, bathroom and pantry.

For this work, FOAM created the design, supervised the process with historic preservation, handled the building application and supervised the construction.
