Roof garden in Rotterdam

On top of a beautiful, old mansion in the heart of Rotterdam, Groenregie has realized a garden at height. Previously, this roof garden consisted of dark gray tiles, artificial grass and a few wooden flower boxes. The owners wanted to transform this space into a beautiful, usable, green and inviting space, which can be used all year round. With this set of requirements, we put a design on paper and then the roof garden was laid out by us.

This roof garden has all the ingredients that a garden on the ground floor can also have: a bamboo fence, an aluminum pergola construction with shade cloth, various terraces on raised platforms, a large border with a tree, attractive garden lighting and even an outdoor kitchen.

The two raised decks are made of smoothly planed hardwood exterior parquet. This parquet is screwed blind with special mounting clips. Due to this mounting method, no screw is visible and the decking has a sleek appearance.

The walkway, which is laid diagonally through the border, is made of old wagon and shed parts. Also called Barnwood. Due to its slanting position and the use of the rough wood, this decking is a surprising contrast to the other two platforms.

The plants in this roof garden grow partly in tight white tall planters. They form an outer frame of the two terraces and are planted with ornamental grasses, which are reminiscent of the dunes and the beach due to their transparent and green appearance. In the middle of the roof garden there is a large planting compartment, in which even a tree has been planted. The plants in this box consist of natural-looking plants, such as Stipa, Carex, Nepeta, Calamintha, Salvia and Fothergilla and add color to the garden.

In the dark, this roof garden is illuminated by a dozen (prick) spots in the planters and in the large border. Wind and tea lights provide even more atmosphere at the lounge sofa and the sun terrace.

The construction of this roof garden at this height was a challenge and was successfully completed, with a beautiful and timeless result that the owners are very happy with.
