Door handle Lucerne from Intersteel fits perfectly with classic-modern furnishings
1930s home at Sancta Maria complex stylishly renovated
With an honorable mention for the BNA best building of the year architecture award* in 2015 for her part in ‘Kulturhus De Trefkoele+’ in Dalfsen, interior designer Petra van Trigt has already more than earned her spurs. She recently completed her latest project: the renovation of a residence in one of the monumental properties on the Sancta Maria estate in Noordwijk. The nearly 100-year-old main building and its pavilions, formerly a psychiatric hospital, were given a new purpose. Luxury townhouses and apartments have been built, all while maintaining their cultural and historical identity. Petra van Trigt renovated the building where the main entrance was located, in the middle of the main building.
One by one, the beautiful monumental plots on Sancta Maria estate are being restored to their former glory, the dark gray roof slates renewed. Hardwood window frames with double glazing replaced the old frames. The sand-colored facades are carefully cleaned and light up again in the sun. Thus, historic old becomes beautifully new again without losing its origins.
Petra says, “No house at Sancta Maria is the same, which makes the project so special. My building dates from 1930. The house was delivered completely as shells; there was really nothing in it except a lot of pigeons that had found a home there. It occupies four floors and has a living area of no less than 400 m2. And even though it is a very classic building, I chose a sleek modern design. The doors flat and with two faceted edges. In the hallway black steel shiny doors to the living room. Door handle model Lucerne from the Living Black collection turned out to be a perfect match. The choice fell on Intersteel, because I like sleek shapes and they have a wide range in this.”
A piece of history
A total of seven classical pavilions and a chapel were built in the heart of the approximately 45-acre estate between 1928 and 1938. Until 2006, it was a care facility where people lived, lived and worked, surrounded by forest and garden. The name “Sancta Maria” may sound remarkable, but it is a clear reference to a rich Roman Catholic past. And that’s right, because for more than 70 years, Psychiatric Hospital Sancta Maria was for female psychiatric patients from Catholic homes. In 1925, the congregation of the Sisters of Charity from Venray bought the property. Amsterdam architect Jos Bekkers then created a structural plan, and construction began in 1927. On December 1, 1928, the first patient arrived.
