Warm and modern
Steffie Van Der Henst and the team at Devos Interieur put their hearts and souls into this new construction project and were responsible for the entire project, from design, choice of materials, through construction follow-up to furnishing and finishing. Steffie: “My first overall project was a great challenge and a wonderful opportunity to effectively put my experience and knowledge of the past 5 years into action.” The result is a contemporary, warm and cozy home where beautiful and pure materials dominate.
The owners wanted a home with a serene look, but dared to go for bold material choices in consultation with Devos Interieur’s design team. All the fixed joinery, made by Biwood, is rather dark in color, while the individual furniture pieces were just chosen in lighter shades such as the Verba Volant desk by Baxter. The leather on the sliding panel was imported from Baxter to match the desk exactly. These are details that make the design. The floor was custom-designed and hand-laid by Nobel Flooring. This new “diamond” design will be used more by Devos Interieur as a signature in the future.
The interior remained plain, but was filled in with some stunning design classics, such as Pierre Jeanneret’s Capitol Complex chair.
“In the living area, we chose Bieke Casteleyn’s table, a piece that is also in our showroom,” says Steffie Van Der Henst of Devos Interieur. “By the way, almost all the furniture in our showroom can be custom-made according to the customer’s personal wishes. Even the color of the joinery is rather unique. I chose a type of wood that only needed a coat of varnish. This gives a very natural feel compared to colored veneers, for example.” The natural stone by the fireplace, installed by Verbaendert, was color-matched with the dining table and floor in the entrance hall. “This house is a great example of the level of finish our clients have come to expect from us.”
TOON ON TOON
The furnishings are sparse, but with special attention to quiet colors and luxurious materials. Miyazaki’s leather Modus chair is combined here with side tables by Giobagnara, designed by Stéphane Parmentier in a caressingly soft suede. The rug from the Belgian brand JoV is rather high pile, feels super soft and fits perfectly with the playful sofa. Bijloos Interior’s window coverings filter the light streaming in through the tall windows.
Devos Interieur drew all the custom work and also had it executed with partners. “To bring high end designs like this residency to fruition, we know better than anyone how important it is to work with the right partners. Work of this level requires a lot of experience and skills,” Steffie says.
Nowhere does the choice of natural materials show up better than in the bathroom. The downright spectacular marble on the bathtub, sinks and shower plays the starring role. Steffie confirms, “I drove halfway around Belgium to find exactly the right marble for this bathroom. This is also part of our customer service: we regularly visit quarries to look for unique slabs. Natural stone is an extremely important part of our designs. All other materials in the master bedroom and bathroom are coordinated with it, such as the shower screen in dark tinted glass and the bronze details of the bathroom cabinet. During the design phase, we explain our choice of materials to clients with clear mood boards. That way they can follow what style we have in mind.”
“The master bedroom feels like a hotel room in which all the spaces flow organically into one another: the bedroom, the bathroom and the dressing room. The latter is by Molteni, a brand that works with standard versions, but with luxurious materials such as leather. That way we can offer a high-end version at an acceptable price. We went to extremes to streamline this interior,” says Steffie Van Der Henst. “All the lighting is in the exact same bronze color and all the hardware has the exact same shade as well. As a team, we are extremely proud of this overall project!”
