Country garden with levels

The first thing you notice is the change in level: lawn, step, border, and terrace each claim their own place. In this country garden with levels, the ground is shaped into clear zones rather than left to flatten out. Concrete steps and retaining edges guide the movement, while raised perennial borders hold the planting close to the path of the eye. The result is a garden that reads as a sequence of spaces, with grass, stone, and bloom all kept in view.

Steps that lead from grass to shelter

The garden steps are more than a transition. They mark the shift from the open lawn to the covered seating area, where the wooden pavilion sits slightly apart from the main grass level. At the foot of the steps, the border wall and the trimmed lawn edge keep the line crisp. That contrast between soft planting and harder construction gives the layout its structure. It also makes the slope legible, so the move from one part of the garden to another feels direct and easy to read.

Seen from the side, the retained levels work as a practical frame for planting. The garden retaining wall supports the raised beds, and those beds carry the flowering borders across several planes. Nothing is pushed into a single flat strip. Instead, the planting rises and falls with the terrain, which gives the garden depth without crowding it. In close view, the borders are dense and colorful; from a distance, they tie the levels together and soften the concrete and brick around them.

Raised perennial borders with a clear edge

The raised perennial borders are one of the strongest elements in the composition. Their height keeps the plants visible above the lawn, and the neat edging prevents the beds from dissolving into the grass. Blooms in pink, purple, and yellow stand out against the green surface, but the planting is not arranged as a pattern for its own sake. It follows the shape of the beds and the line of the wall, so the color sits inside the architecture of the garden rather than on top of it.

Along the longer runs, the border surfaces change from one section to the next. Some edges are rendered in concrete, others read as brick or low masonry, and that variation gives the garden retaining wall a useful visual role. It separates the levels, but it also draws the eye along the length of the plot. The flowering borders then take over that line, filling the frame with foliage and blossoms that rise just high enough to be seen from the terrace and the lawn.

Stone underfoot, grass beside it

The natural stone patio sits beside the lawn rather than away from it. That placement matters, because it lets the paving work as a pause point in the route through the garden. Large stone slabs and tighter paved sections meet the grass edge, while a nearby strip of stepping stones suggests another way through the space. The difference in texture is clear: the stone holds the seating zone, and the lawn keeps the wider garden open. In the photos, that tension between the two surfaces gives the project its calm order.

From the patio, the eye moves toward the raised borders and then toward the pavilion. The sequence is simple, but it is carefully controlled by height. A low wall here, a step there, and a change in paving are enough to break the garden into readable parts. Because the patio is finished in natural stone, it does not compete with the planting. It anchors the foreground and leaves room for the flowers, the retaining wall, and the wooden structure to carry the rest of the scene.

A wooden pavilion with a fireplace at the back

The wooden pavilion with fireplace gives the garden a second center. It is not hidden at the edge; it is drawn into the layout as a place where the level changes settle into a covered room. The wooden posts, dark roof tiles, and brickwork around the chimney create a strong material contrast. Inside, the masonry fireplace becomes the visual anchor. It is seen as an outdoor fire element rather than described technically, and that is enough to show how the pavilion extends the use of the garden into the evening.

What stands out in this part of the project is the mix of enclosure and openness. The pavilion has the feel of a sheltered outdoor room, yet it remains connected to the lawn and borders around it. The timber structure frames the view back across the garden, while the chimney and brick base add weight at one end. In one image, the open side of the pavilion is visible through the posts; in another, the fireplace occupies the center, with stone flooring beneath it and the wooden construction behind it.

Material changes that keep the layout readable

Hout, baksteen, beton en natuursteen are all present, but each material is used where it can do something specific. The concrete steps make the level change explicit. The brickwork around the fireplace gives the pavilion a fixed point. The natural stone patio broadens the seating area. Wood softens the roofed structure and keeps it visually connected to the garden. Because the materials are separated by use rather than mixed for effect, the plan remains easy to follow even when the borders become dense with flowering planting.

That clarity is also visible in the edges. The border walls are low enough to stay in scale with the lawn, but they are substantial enough to hold the raised soil behind them. The path and step transitions remain simple, with no unnecessary turns. Around the beds, the planting is allowed to do the decorative work. The garden steps, retaining wall, and patio form the framework; the flowering borders provide movement and color within that frame.

A garden shaped by height and pause

What gives this country garden with levels its character is the way it alternates between movement and stillness. One moment you are on the lawn, the next on a stone terrace, then at a step that lifts you toward the pavilion. Each shift is small, but together they make the garden feel larger than a single flat surface would allow. The raised perennial borders keep that movement visible, because they repeat the change in height in planted form. Nothing is overdrawn. The project relies on clear lines, firm edges, and planting that follows the terrain.

Even in the closer photographs, the composition stays disciplined. A cluster of purple flowers sits in front of a blurred backdrop of grass and masonry. Another view shows the border running beside the lawn, with the retaining wall and steps carrying the eye toward the covered area. The project ends up feeling less like one big gesture and more like a series of well-placed shifts. That is where the strength of the layout lies: in the measured relation between grass, stone, wood, and the raised planting that joins them.
