Home renovation with a U-shaped extension and central inner courtyard

Space begins with the U-shaped extension, which wraps around a central inner courtyard and gives the house a new middle ground. That move answers the original need for more living room, but it also changes how the rooms meet the garden. From the first view, glass, stone and open voids pull the eye inward, so the courtyard becomes the hinge between daily life inside and the outdoor rooms beyond. It is a home renovation that uses planning, not excess, to create room to breathe.

A new middle for everyday living

The U-shaped extension does more than add square metres. It sets up a clear route around the courtyard, with covered edges and open views that keep the garden present throughout the plan. The inner court sits at the centre of the composition, framed by glazed openings and low terraces. In the photographs, the contrast is immediate: straight lines in the building, softer planting at the edge, and a floor plane that keeps moving from lounge to terrace without visual clutter. This is where the project’s home renovation brief becomes legible.

Inside the new layout, the existing living room has been opened into an indoor lounge with large operable glass panels and slim black window frames. The openings are deliberately light in appearance, so the wall line does not feel heavy even when the doors are closed. On summer days, the panels can be opened fully and the lounge starts to behave like a terrace room. The shift is practical, but it is also spatial: the boundary between inside and outside stops reading as a fixed line and becomes a moving edge.

Glass that opens the room to the courtyard

Seen from the interior, the glazing does most of the quiet work. Large sliding glass panels let the courtyard, trees and grass stay in view while a round woven pendant, a dining table and pale wall surfaces hold the room together. The slim black frames keep the openings sharp rather than decorative. Along one wall, a fireplace zone with grey natural stone and darker insets anchors the lounge; it gives the room a fixed point while the glass keeps the perimeter open. The result is an indoor-outdoor living sequence that changes with the weather.

The same restraint appears in the finishes. Pale flooring carries light across the room, while the black profiles and dark niches create contrast instead of ornament. A TV niche and wall storage sit within the stone-clad zone, keeping the room free of loose objects. The image of the lounge facing the garden is telling: the room is not staged around a single feature, but around movement, with the courtyard and terrace visible through the openings. That is where the home renovation feels most resolved.

A lounge that can disappear into summer air

When the operable glass panels are opened, the lounge no longer ends at the threshold. Air comes in from the garden side, and the room takes on the scale of the courtyard outside. The frames remain slim enough to stay in the background, which lets the view take priority. It is a simple idea, but it depends on exact detailing: the opening widths, the alignment with the terrace, and the way the interior floor meets the exterior surface. Those details make the indoor-outdoor living arrangement read as one continuous route.

Cooking outside, then staying for the evening

The outdoor living area extends the renovation in a more direct way. A custom outdoor kitchen has been built into the extension, with a BBQ fireplace set against grey natural stone and dark framing. Nearby, open shelving and tailored niches keep tools and serving pieces within reach, so the cooking area reads as part of the architecture rather than a separate appliance zone. In the images, the kitchen wall sits under an overhang, which gives it a defined ceiling and allows the space to be used long after the sun has dropped lower.

Next to the cooking zone, a covered outdoor lounge provides a place to pause. The roof edge, ceiling lights and sheltered seating area create a clear pause between the courtyard and the garden. It is not a large gesture, but it changes how the space is used. One side is for heat, smoke and food; the other is for sitting back and looking out toward the planting and lawn. Together, the outdoor kitchen and covered outdoor lounge turn the extension into a place that can hold an entire summer evening.

Fireplace, shelf and stone in one wall

The strongest outdoor wall combines the BBQ area and outdoor fireplace into a single composition. Grey natural stone gives it mass, while black openings and lighter cabinet fronts break that mass into useful parts. In one view, the fire burns within a dark niche; in another, the shelving and counter line pull the eye horizontally across the wall. That balance of heat and storage is what makes the custom outdoor kitchen practical. It is also what gives the terrace its architectural focus without relying on decoration.

A poolhouse that finishes the day cleanly

At the edge of the outdoor zone, the poolhouse adds a final, small but telling piece. After a swim in the outdoor pool, the shower offers a direct return to the house sequence, with grey tiled surfaces and dark fixtures visible in the detail images. It is the kind of room that often gets left vague in project descriptions, yet here it is clear and functional in the best sense: a place to rinse off, dry down and move back through the garden without breaking the rhythm of the day. The poolhouse shower closes the outdoor circuit.

What holds the whole renovation together is the way each part answers the others. The courtyard gives the house a centre. The glass openings keep that centre visible from the lounge. The custom outdoor kitchen and covered outdoor lounge extend daily use outside. The poolhouse shower finishes the sequence near the pool. Even the material shifts stay disciplined: black frames, grey stone, pale flooring and restrained joinery. This home renovation is not about adding one striking room; it is about organizing a villa renovation around light, access and the central inner courtyard.

The project was developed in collaboration with a designer, and the garden was designed separately, which helps explain why the planting edge and terrace lines feel so considered in the photos. The result is a house that now works around its middle, not just along its perimeter. For readers looking at a villa renovation or a U-shaped extension of their own, the lesson is clear in the layout: when the centre is given shape, the rooms around it start to read more clearly too.
