Layered wooden facade design for balanced openness and privacy

Wooden slats clad the exterior of a house extension, each facade applying the material with subtle differences that form distinct layers. This approach to wooden facade design allows the building to interact with its environment by alternating between openness and enclosure.

On the garden-facing side, slats are spaced wider apart, forming a screen that filters view and light without closing off the space. Behind the wood lattice, a recessed glass sliding door opens a wide view onto the greenery, blending indoor and outdoor realms. The spacing creates textured shadows and invites dappled daylight through the facade.

Subtle Shifts in Orientation Shape the Front Elevation

The front side, connecting back to the original house, features wooden slats aligned horizontally to continue the line of an existing canopy. This precise orientation visually extends the canopy’s height and links old and new construction. A window matching the canopy’s width punctuates this facade, offering natural light while responding to the established proportions of the home.

Here, where kitchen cabinets are located, a simple door with a small canopy allows entry. Vertical timber posts at the corners frame the volume and introduce a rhythm to this otherwise closed facade. Their height contrasts with the solid timber and glass surfaces, adding subtle architectural features that avoid monotony.

Coherent Layers Create Spatial Dialogue

Each facade’s timber is thoughtfully arranged to engage with its surroundings. The layering from dense to open wooden slats mediates views and sunlight, allowing privacy without sacrificing daylight or connection to the outdoors. These nuanced differences offer an architectural texture that evolves around the building’s perimeter.

Large Glass Elements Anchor the Indoor-Outdoor Relationship

Substantial glass panels, including a large sliding door set back from the wooden screen, provide direct sightlines from the interior kitchen area onto the garden. This invites natural light deep into the new space and supports a visual and spatial relation between the indoors and the landscaped surroundings. That makes the wooden facade design part of the architectural character rather than a loose finish.

Landscape and Terrace Complement the Building’s Layers

The garden extends from the facade with maintained planting beds and a terrace area for outdoor seating. The greenery is visible through the wider-spaced slats and full-height glass doors, framing views and softening the extension’s geometric forms.

Material Palette: Wood, Glass, and Masonry in Dialogue

The extension’s exterior combines vertical wooden slats with glass expanses and sturdy masonry elements from the original house. This combination highlights architectural features by contrasting textures and materials while promoting a naturalistic yet structured appearance.

Light and Shadow Play Through Layered Wood

As sunlight moves during the day, shadows cast by the wooden slats animate the facade. The layered design modulates brightness and privacy dynamically, adding visual interest without extra ornamentation or color.

Inside, the kitchen includes large windows and glass doors that open onto the garden, letting in ample daylight. Furniture placement and clean lines emphasize the link with outdoor green spaces, reinforcing the layered exterior concept by mirroring openness within.

Photographs document the varied wooden facades, large transparent openings, and the surrounding garden that accompanies this building extension, displaying the careful use of materials and architectural details throughout the project. That makes the wooden facade design part of the architectural character rather than a loose finish.
