Modern City Garden with Curved Hedges

The long, narrow layout gives this modern city garden its pace. Curved hedge design pulls the eye forward, while the trimmed hedge shapes break the length into smaller scenes. Stone garden paths cut through the planting and lead toward terrace zones, where the garden-to-house connection becomes visible in the line between glazing, paving and lawn. Rounded hedge blocks sit close to the edges, giving the space a sculpted profile without flattening the planting.

Curved lines inside a narrow plot

From one end to the other, the garden reads as a sequence of bends rather than a straight run. The hedge forms are clipped into rounded volumes and longer sweeps, so the borders move in waves beside the grass. That structure matters in a plot like this. It keeps the eye from stopping at the end wall and gives each turn its own edge. The result is a city garden project that feels measured by lines, not by ornament.

Those trimmed hedge shapes also set the rhythm for the rest of the planting. Between the larger masses, smaller pockets of greenery and ornamental grasses borders soften the edge of the paths. The grasses sit lower and looser, while the hedges hold their shape above them. That difference in height makes the route legible. It also keeps the planted areas distinct from the paving, so the garden rooms read clearly even when they overlap visually.

From terrace to lawn

The terrace to lawn transition is one of the clearest moves in the garden. Stone paving gives way to grass through a curved edge instead of a hard line, and that shift repeats in several places across the plan. In the photos, the lawn sits inside the hedge structure like a calm central panel, while the paving holds the working edges of the garden. Because the boundaries are rounded, the change from terrace to lawn feels drawn rather than cut.

That same logic appears in the way the garden rooms are arranged. A paved zone opens near the house, then another space gathers around a bend in the hedges. The transitions are not announced with different materials for their own sake; they are marked by proportion, by the way the path narrows, and by where the planting rises. The long plot becomes easier to read because each space has its own size and edge, but the route still stays continuous.

Stone paving as a guide

Stone garden paths give the project its direction. They sit low and clean against the planting, sometimes running as a narrow strip, sometimes widening into a terrace. The paving pattern is visible enough to register as a surface, but it never takes over the garden. Instead, it acts like a guide through the hedge masses. Along the path edges, the clipped greenery and the stone meet at a sharp line, which makes the route feel deliberate and anchored.

The same material also appears in the terrace zones, where the surface opens out beside the house. There, the paving connects directly to the glazed openings and the sheltered edge of the building. That house-to-garden connection is plain in the images: inside and outside are held together by the same horizontal lines, and by the way the terrace stretches outward before it meets the grass. The stone does not just finish the floor; it extends the room into the garden.

Garden rooms held by hedge volumes

What makes the composition legible is the repeated use of hedge volumes as walls, corners and markers. Some are round and compact. Others are longer and flatter, almost like low topiary blocks placed beside the route. Together they form a chain of garden rooms that can be read from different angles. The spaces never feel empty, because each opening is bounded by green mass on one side and paving or lawn on the other.

Light changes the feel of those rooms as you move through them. In the terraces, the paving reflects more of the daylight, while the clipped hedges absorb it and cast denser shadows at their base. The contrast between the two keeps the garden from becoming visually flat. Even the more compact rounded hedge blocks carry a sense of movement because their edges catch the light differently from the leaves behind them. The scene changes with small steps, not with large gestures.

Detail in the planting edge

Along the lower margins, the planting is quieter and more open. Ornamental grasses borders run beside the paths and between the larger hedge forms, adding a finer texture to the stronger shapes. Their thin stems and lighter movement soften the edge of the stone and keep the hard surfaces from feeling heavy. Behind them, trees and shrubs make a deeper green backdrop, so the clipped forms stay readable in front of a layered planting frame.

That layering is one of the reasons the garden feels more substantial than its width might suggest. The eye moves from grass to hedge, from hedge to tree canopy, and then back down to the paving. Because the layers are clearly separated, the long narrow space gains depth without needing extra decoration. The planting is doing spatial work here. It narrows a path, marks a corner, and frames a terrace in the same move.

A clear connection between house and garden

The connection between the house and the garden is strongest where the glazing opens onto the terrace. The surface of the paving aligns with the indoor line, then continues outward until the planted edge takes over. In the images, the terrace does not sit apart from the garden; it is one of the garden rooms. The transition is visible in the change from stone underfoot to clipped hedge beside it, and then to the softer level of the lawn.

Rostvrijstalen elements appear in the route as well, adding a cooler note beside the stone and greenery. They are small details, but they sharpen the reading of the path and the steps. Combined with the brick and stone materials, they help define the project’s structure without introducing visual noise. The garden stays focused on a few clear moves: shaped hedges, curved routes, paving, and the steady line from terrace to lawn.

Photography and materials

Photography by Annick Vernimmen records the garden at the point where the shapes are most legible: clipped hedge masses, curved lawn edges, and the paved surfaces that hold the composition together. The material palette is restrained and direct. Brick, stone paving and stainless steel are the recurring elements, with greenery carrying the larger visual weight. That combination suits the long plot, where a strong outline matters more than a full list of features.

Seen as a whole, the modern city garden depends on repetition and variation at the same time. Rounded hedge blocks reappear, but never in exactly the same relationship to the path. Stone garden paths shift from narrow to open. The lawn edges bend, then straighten, then bend again. Those changes keep the project moving while the structure remains clear. It is a garden shaped by routes, edges and low, clipped masses, all arranged to fit the length of the site.
