Taxus clouds sit low and dense against wintergreen groundcover, while purple ornamental onions lift small points of colour above the darker planting. The front garden establishes the same language that returns later: straight lines, clipped forms and a restrained palette.

That first impression matters because it prepares the shift toward the inner garden. The thatched roof softens the modern volume of the house, and the garden takes that contrast seriously. It does not compete with the architecture. Instead, it uses the same mix of calm lines and planted rhythm, with the paving, gate and hedging keeping the approach legible. The result is a front garden that reads as part of a larger layout, not as a separate ornamental layer.

Inside the garden, the black pergola becomes the clearest rhythm marker. The composition feels deliberate because each zone is slightly different in texture, from the smooth concrete edges to the loose river gravel and the denser slate pieces.

These gravel garden paths do important work in the overall layout. They separate the lawn from the harder terraces, but they also keep the circulation light enough that the pond and planting remain the main focus. The stepping stones pull the route forward in small increments, and the grass around them keeps the composition open. Seen from the house, the pattern of pavers and gravel reads like a quiet grid, interrupted only where the planting leans in.

The swimming pond as the centre of the plan

At the end of that route lies the swimming pond, set like a blue line through the green garden. It has a clear form, but the water edge is softened by planting and by the surrounding lawn, so the pond feels integrated rather than isolated. The walls are made of durable hardwood and lined with EPDM foil, and the water is purified through a biological pond filtration system with marsh planting, supported by technical systems. Those facts matter, but visually the pond is first read as a reflective surface bordered by structured planting and a long deck.

The deck by swimming pond runs alongside the water in low-maintenance composite material, giving the pond a place to sit and look back across the garden. It is a useful counterweight to the gravel and slate elsewhere: one surface is loose, another is fixed, and the deck offers a more continuous plane beside the water. From here, the purple borders become especially visible, because they line up against the calm surface of the pond and the strip of lawn beside it.

Poolhouse, terrace and the edge of the water

On one side of the pond stands a poolhouse with a kitchen and an outdoor shower. Its form echoes the house, yet it keeps its own identity through its position at the water’s edge and the terrace that extends from it. The adjacent deck is generous enough to use after swimming, and the composite boards keep the line along the pond clean. From the terrace, the view is held between the pond, the planting and the roofline of the poolhouse, which makes this edge of the garden feel settled without becoming static.

The relationship between poolhouse and pond is especially clear in the materials. Hard surfaces are used where movement is needed, while planting and lawn soften the surroundings. The deck by swimming pond creates a place to stop, dry off and look back towards the main garden. Nothing is overdrawn. The architecture, the water and the planting each keep their own proportions, which is why the space reads so clearly in photographs and at ground level alike.

Planting that holds the view in place

The planting plan is strongest where it solves two jobs at once. It shapes the garden visually and it gives the borders a reason to change through the seasons. Purple perennials and ornamental grasses run beside the pond, repeating the violet note that first appears in the front garden. Evergreen shrubs keep the structure intact when the flowers fade, and fruit trees add a looser canopy deeper in the plot. From the large windows of the house, the garden remains readable as one composition.
