Wood in the lead role
Old, reclaimed wood often has a robust look, yet it can be used medially very well in a variety of interior styles, even in a sleek kitchen.

We look inside the home of one of the three brothers behind RestyleXL, Ruud van Oudenallen. At RestyleXL, they design and build kitchens and interiors in which reclaimed wood plays the starring role. “That material was therefore definitely not to be missed in my own kitchen,” Ruud says. “Since my partner likes a tighter interior design style than I do, we combined the reclaimed wood with a white contemporary kitchen island.”

Multiple faces
“This wood comes from old oak wall boards from houses in Slovenia. We shaved off all the top layers, giving it a modern look. It would look completely different if we brushed the wood. That’s the nice thing about old wood. You can do anything with it. The power is often in the combination of materials. We chose a white powder-coated island with a ceramic worktop in the same shade of white. It was quite a search to find a suitable worktop, but this one is practical and fits well with the kitchen unit.” To bring the cabinetry and the island a little closer together in terms of atmosphere, they made a wooden element that they put on the back of the island.

Now and later
The cabinetry incorporates a hidden coffee corner, which opens electrically and has a pull-out for ease of use. “We wanted to form a symmetrical image. If we integrated a coffee machine into the cabinetry, the lines no longer matched. This solution is perfect!” In addition to aesthetics, functionality was important in the design. They were thinking about all of it, including the future. “I like to cook on gas, which is why we chose Pitt cooking. But combined with induction, should gas go out in the future. You can only be prepared.”
